PIANO TUNING

Pianos are very robust and powerful instruments, but still remain fragile and sensitive to the changes in the atmospheric temperature.

Whether it’s an upright piano or a grand piano, having the instrument tuned every now and then is very important. Especially because of the Maltese humid climate!

WHAT MAKES A PIANO GO OUT OF TUNE?

ATMOSPHERIC CHANGES

Fluctuations in humidity are a definite NO for pianos. The main material out of which pianos are made is wood, which is something alive.

When exposed to high levels of humidity the piano’s wooden parts will swell & stretch, and vice-versa.

FREQUENT USAGE

From having a piano at home as a living room décor to play it every once in a while to using it daily for music lessons does make a difference.

Playing regularly the piano puts the strings under constant stress & loosens up the pins, leading the instrument to go out of tune.

TUNING A PIANO SHOULD BE FREQUENT

Normally a piano should be serviced once a year, but given the high level of humidity in Malta, piano tuning is to be carried out 3 – 4 times, yearly.

If a piano has not been tuned for many years, the likelihood is that the tension of the strings, and consequently the pitch, have dropped a lot. It is only by tuning the piano that you bring it back to produce the correct pitch.

HOW DO WE CARRY OUT PIANO TUNING?

Piano tuning requires patience and an excellent eye and ear for detail which our German technicians certainly have. When carrying out a piano tuning we handle the adjustment of the strings and pins by using a dedicated set of tools such as a piano tuning hammer, a tuning fork, various mutes and an electronic tuning device.

The main aim of piano tuning is ultimately that of aligning the intervals between the strings’ tones. This helps in bringing back the instrument’s 236 strings in tune with each other!

Tuning the piano means as well taking care of removing any rust, dust and mould accumulated by time on the strings and the soundboard. These three elements can have a really bad effect on your piano’s tune.

At Auth. Piano Dealer Erik&Son, we guarantee an in-depth inspection of the tiny bits inside the piano frame and tune it to an equal temperament.

Whether you have a piano for professional use or just for home use, we are able to carry out piano tuning accordingly.
