WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A SECOND-HAND PIANO?

Purchasing a second-hand piano is an ideal alternative to a new piano. However, there is always the hassle of what to look for and whether a second-hand piano would be up to your desired standards.

HERE ARE SOME TIPS FROM US!

BUDGET

Buying a second-hand piano is normally cheaper than going for a new one. But, it can still be more expensive than other instruments. So make sure you set up a budget.

LOCATION

The space occupied by a an upright piano is not the same as that occupied by a grand. Measure the space where you envision of placing the piano to make sure it will fit easily.

THE KEYS

Watch out for any chips, discolouring and dirt. These could give you a sign of the piano’s age and how much it has been played!

THE SOUND

Listen carefully to the dampers. Are notes continuing to ring after releasing the key? The pedals are also important, so make sure they don’t squeak or make loud noises.

THE CASEWORK

Go through the condition of the piano casing to see if there are any broken hinges, loose parts or other damage. This gives you an indication of how well maintained the piano was.

THE INSIDES

Look at the soundboard and check for any cracks in it. A slight crack in the soundboard can really affect badly the piano’s tuning.

HISTORY

Ask for the date of manufacturing and where was it crafted to get an idea of its origins and age. You’ll get a general profile of the piano. Plus, it’s exciting!
