THE ORIGINS OF THE PIANO
The invention of the piano is attributed to Bartolomeo Cristofori who worked for the Medici family in Florence, as an instruments’ Keeper. His knowledge on stringed keyboard instruments was one to admire and it was this which actually led him to build the first piano some time towards the end of the 17th century.
He referred to it as un cimbalo di cipresso di piano e forte. In other words, his first piano was made of cypress wood which created a sound that was soft and loud.
The piano was going to be that instrument which would offer the best of both sounds created by the clavichord and the harpsichord. These were the trending keyboard string instruments before Cristofori’s invention.
He looked into creating loud sounds in different volumes by having a hammer striking the string and raise off whenever a note is hit on the keyboard without causing a violent vibration. It was all in the mechanics!
Over time, inventors following Cristofori’s path, added more notes, invented an iron frame, enhanced the sound boards and the wire strings, added the pedals and other add-ons to continue improving the piano’s versatile sounds.
The beauty of the piano is actually in it’s versatility of producing a range of whispering to roaring sounds. Thanks to the many music possibilities provided by the piano, many musicians have used this instrument to experiment their music creativity without any boundaries.
